Custom design for Emendo – Growing as a designer
We got this project in 2013 when a company named Emendo took contact to me2we to find them a designer for their needs. Emendo is an import and wholesale company, which is focused on sauna and wellness products. We in the other hand are young design couple with fresh and multitalented skills. Lauri Tornberg is an industrial designer with metal workers background and Paula Tuomela is interior and furniture designer with textile design background. Our task was to design a new, updated and premium series sauna kit and bucket.
We’ve known me2we from earlier projects since Paula had designed their new logo and office space. Working with me2we has always been very straightforward and pleasant. This project found us through Petri Tuomela and we started collaboration with Emendo. For us, combining our strengths, it was a natural and exciting decision to say yes for this project. Lauri was the one who was mostly in contact with the client but design is well thought by both of us. We sketched a lot of designs before we chose three final successions to send to our client. From there we improved the last and final design, which Emendo had chosen. Lauri made the technical drawings for the manufacturing, which are mostly he’s field.
First protos were made in August 2014. One of the greatest moments of being a designer was to get a physical and real product under our eyes. Most of us have used to design products in screen but only handful get to see their own design as a real product. Emendo gave us an opportunity to name the product and to decide the colors of it. The kit and bucket got its idea from stone and how they crack. Each of the broken rocks makes their unique shape and that’s how louhe got its shape. Louhe means blasted stone and by knowing the story behind the product you start to look at it in a new way. It´s something, which stands out from the used round kit -shapes.
Working with a company like Emendo was fascinating especially for us as students (at that time) to see the whole process from designing the product, from protos to manufacturing and then the best part seeing the product in stores shelves. How rewarding! It has been nice to read positive comments on Emendos facebook –page by customers who likes the design. We made it and stand proud behind the final product. Thanks to me2we and Emendo.
